Vertical Schools
:
A multi-storey model of education for inner-city sites
2015
School design transitions from building outward to upward as cities densify. Changes to land economics, tight site restrictions and large accommodation briefs require a school design more accustomed to commercial-grade high-rise buildings than its suburban predecessors. This new type of multi-storey school swaps the old assembly yard for rooftop playgrounds, atrium connected spaces and bustling city streets. Exhibited models display a collection of vertical schools that have emerged across the globe. The colour-coded spatial arrangement of these models reveals the anatomical workings of built exemplars that seek to enhance education, student wellbeing and city-making.
